Less than a week ago Columbus capitulated at home to New York, stinking up the place with a weak effort that no one hopes to see repeated at Crew Stadium any time soon. And now this …
Friday the club announced its steady goalkeeper, William Hesmer, has undergone a hip procedure that will keep the veteran out for six months, which means most of this season. The club also announced surgery performed on Tommy Heinemann’s left knee, which puts the young striker out for 9-12 months.
The news on Hesmer is particularly concerning, although it’s not exactly devastating. As I noted just yesterday on this very blog site, Columbus’ goalkeeping situation is (well “was”) among the league’s best thanks to rock-solid backup Andy Gruenebaum. So this won’t necessarily be crushing to the Crew’s playoff ambitions.
It does, however, remove the cover. If something happens to Gruenebaum the Crew will be scrambling to piece together its goalkeeping scene.
Hesmer, 30, owns most goalkeeping marks around Crew Stadium, including career records in games played (130), wins (59), shutouts (41) and saves (412).
