ProSoccerTalk’s Jenna Pel got a personal tour of the new Houston Dynamo home on Tuesday. She’ll have her own pretty words and prettier pictures later.
But for the stadium geeks among us (Be proud, fellow SGs, hide not in shame!), you just cannot get enough of this stuff.
So check out the Dynamo’s cool camera work as the lens go zooming around BBVA Compass Stadium in a quick video that includes some magnificent shots with downtown Houston in the background.
(The new grounds open Saturday; NBC Sports Network will be on the scene.)

I guess my issue with BBVA Compass Stadium is how many people are touting it as a “downtown venue”. It’s not. It’s a good five or six miles from the skirts of downtown Houston, and Robertson Stadium on U of H campus is MUCH closer to those limits than Compass. Don’t get me wrong — I think the stadium is gorgeous and is located in an appropriate place. I just think how it’s being described and sold to the public is misleading.

You must not be from Houston. Highway 59 is the eastern boundary for downtown. The stadium is literally 3 city blocks from highway 59. As another article puts it, it’s a ten minute walk from Market Square park, which is essentially on the western side of downtown.
At least look at google maps, sheesh.

Don’t insult me by the “look at a map” comment. I have, and I do.
But you’re right, I do not live in Houston. I’ve never been there. And I’m fully aware that my comment is probably naive or ignorant. But when you’re looking at a map and pictures and you see the skyline 5 miles away, that does not connotate a “downtown” setting to an outsider. You can get the same feel from PPL Park, which is NOT a downtown setting.
Don’t get me wrong. I like the fact that it’s actually in the city, and well within walking distance from places downtown. It’s not Frisco or Foxboro or Crew Stadium. But it’s also not Century-Link, JELD-WEN, BC Place, or BMO Field, either.

You know what, I take it all back. You’re right. The placemark I had saved previously is completely wrong. My apologies.
