U.S. international Michael Parkhurst wins Danish Superliga crown
May 23, 2012, 6:35 PM EDT
Herculez Gomez’s club won a Mexican championship Sunday.
Sacha Kljestan’s club, Anderlecht, now reigns over Belgium.
Jozy Altidore’s Dutch club finished high enough in the Eredivisie table to secure a Europa berth, big doings for the small club.
And now we another member of the U.S. player pool to have claimed team hardware (or a high league placement): It’s Michael Parkhurst.
His Danish club, FC Nordsjælland, just secured the Danish Superliga crown. Parkhurst, a career center back, was a right back for Wednesday’s title clincher.
It’s a first league title for Parkhurst, who was the heart of some terrific New England Revolution defenses of the last decade, back lines that helped get his Revs into three MLS Cup finals – although New England lost all three.
Also significant: According to the report from MLSSoccer.com, Parkhurst is the second American to lift a Superliga trophy; Chivas USA defender Danny Califf claimed the crown with Aalborg BK in 2008.
Others in the pool worth mentioning for their club’s finish:
- Steve Cherundolo’s Hannover (7th in the German Bundesliga) earned a Europa League qualifier spot.
- Oguchi Onyewu’s Sporting Lisbon (4th in Portugal) has a Europa League spot.
