Stunning insight from FIFA president Sepp Blatter

May 25, 2012, 11:25 AM EST

Joseph Sepp Blatter

Every time FIFA president Sepp Blatter says something that even borders on substantive, I think two things:

First, that the wheels of world soccer grind painfully slowly. We’ve been talking about goal line technology since … and we’re just now getting around to serious testing.

So anything Blatter or  anyone else in a FIFA blazer might propose, no one should think it’s speeding down Implementation Street. Because it isn’t.

Second, I think: “Well, at least he’s not talking about improving women’s soccer through shorter shorts. Not again, anyway.”

So run it through the FIFA filter, but Blatter has noticed that penalty kick shootouts are a less-than-perfect method for deciding major championships. Good thing he told the rest of us; we’ll keep an eye out for that.

Blatter told the ongoing FIFA Congress in Budapest that “football can be a tragedy when you go to penalty kicks. Football should not go to one-to-one, when it goes to penalty kicks football loses its essence.

“Perhaps Franz Beckenbauer with his Football 2014 group can show us a solution perhaps not today but in the future,” Blatter said.

Oh, and how’s that Football 2014 initiative working out so far? Not so great, if we’re being honest.
