Everybody loves American success stories from foreign lands, which is why there’s been such an impassioned cry for Herculez Gomez to get more national team caps. That goes back two years to Gomez’s late (and ultimately successful) reach for a spot on Bob Bradley’s roster at South Africa 2010.
Closer to home, Chris Wondolowski has been on a three-year scoring tear like no one else, so there are plenty of Wondo backers among the U.S.supporter brigades.
Well, one of them – and probably both – are sure to get a shot tonight in Jacksonville.
Bottom line here: there simply won’t be that many other choices at forward when the United States meets Scotland (8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network).
Forwards on the roster:
Jozy AltidoreClint Dempsey- Landon Donovan
- Terrence Boyd
- Herculez Gomez
- Chris Wondolowski
Dempsey is injured. Altidore is resting.
I expect to see Donovan in a wider role. Either way, one or two strikers will be deployed higher up the field.
If you listen to what Jurgen Klinsmann said about Boyd during yesterday’s national teleconference, it sounds like the young German-American is well-liked and highly regarded for his potential. But it doesn’t sound like Klinsmann believes Boyd is the short-term scoring solution.
Said Klinsmann: “He is adjusting to our way of doing things. He is a very curious kid. He wants to do better every day. He’s very energetic, and that’s why he made the cut. He was sharp every day. He did everything he could and that’s why he deserves to be in there. We’ll see how he’ll do now over the next couple of weeks.”
That leaves … Gomez and Wondolowski. So there you go.

Herc has earned the start. Best in-form forward for the USMNT (considering Dempsey an attacking mid) over the past season, so not only deserving of the callup, but also the start. Hope he goes all 90. Would like to see Boyd and Wondo split 45/45 at the other forward spot in a 4-1-3-2 setup.

I know Dempsey has been used all over the place (wide, high in the midfield), looks to me like second forward is his best spot. That’s where Fulham used him most this year.
