Berlintexas, I think the reason you have this screwy approach of playing your best for exhibitions (which by definition don't matter) and playing scrubs for cup games (which matter a lot) is that for MLS teams, the friendlies are actually anticipated more than cup games. In fact, sometimes they are even bigger draws than MLS regular season games, which also presumably count the most. (EG. the Galaxy is selling astronomically priced tickets to a Tottenham and Real Madrid games, and sells quite a Galaxy tickets by packaging them together with discounted tickets to those friendlies.)

Another issue about playing inferior players in the USOC: I think there's likely a lot of pressure from the execs in MLS Central to treat all MLS games like they matter, even when they don't (Geez, even the woeful Galaxy are still just a result or two away from a playoff spot). Thus the stupid practice of tiring out your best players for an MLS game right ahead of an elimination game where a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League (and therefore a berth to the FIFA World Club Championship Cup, or whatever it's officially called) is up for grabs.

Cautious coaches probably say to themselves as they draw up their USOC lineups: Management won't care much if we lose in the USOC, but if I lose a good player to injury, I'll catch a lot of heat.

The thing that will make that change is when the fans put the pressure on the front office and the team by calling them out if they fail in the cup. Seattle, RSL, Portland, perhaps NYRB - the supporters of these teams have already gotten their teams on board to take the USOC seriously; other teams will get there with enough pressure.

No one outside the limited circle of MLS fans would be talking about the USOC without the crazy upsets, particularly Cal FC. My non-soccer friends don't understand why we don't take it seriously but didn't know it existed before this week. Frankly, I don't understand why we don't take it seriously either, but if "perception" is the only reason than it doesn't surprise me teams play starters in friendlies (Dynamo) over the USOC.

Noah, for MLS to gain respect with soccer fans, it needs to earn it. Playing in cup competitions like the USOC and CCL shows where MLS stands relative to other leagues. MLS either has that ambition to show it deserves its Div 1 status from its performances on the field, or it doesn't. Without promotion/relegation, this really is the only way for them to demonstrate their legitimacy of being placed at the top of the US soccer pyramid.

I get that there's schedule congestion, but that's not a valid excuse for playing inferior sides for the do-or-die USOC. Half of MLS teams make the playoffs, so the results of regular season games in May/June matter very little. Teams should be resting guys they need for USOC instead of tiring them out in reg season games that are individually relatively meaningless.

Fans should hold teams accountable just as much if they half-a$$ it as if they try their hardest. My team (Galaxy) mailed it in and lost. That being said, some MLS teams were trying their hardest (Portland and RSL) and they still lost.

Perhaps MLS could add incentives for its teams to take the games more seriously? How about $250,000 in allocation money for each win by an MLS team? That might get teams to take the games a little more seriously? Win 4 games and you have won the US Open Cup, qualified for the CCL, and added $1M to your salary cap.
