Everyone has “3-1″ on the mind today. We are all yakking about and dissecting the 3-1 result – just maybe not the same 3-1 result.
South of the border, the other big kid on the regional soccer block is dealing with its own 3-1 crisis – if you choose to call it so.
Mexico opened World Cup qualifying at home Friday, just like the United States. El Tri opened against a regional minnow, just like the United States.
And today, the Mexicans are trying to straining to convince fans and media that three points are three points, that World Cup qualifying is a long slog and that nothing comes easy against the “bus parkers” of the world, teams that come in willing to sacrifice all for defense. They are trying to do so, just like the United States.
Carlos Salcido and Giovani Dos Santos scored before the break, and the Mexicans went on to beat little Guyana on Friday at Azteca Stadium. Yes, the same Azteca Stadium that is so legendarily tough on opponents. All in all, Mexico’s result would be even more concerning than the United States’ result. It would be, that is, if Jose Manuel de la Torre’s Mexican side didn’t come flying into the qualifying cycle on such a wonderful run of results.
That provides a little cushioning for the Guyana blow. Still, de la Torre knows his team needs better Tuesday when Mexico travels to El Salvador.
“This was definitely not a good game for us,” de la Torre said. “We were not precise on offense, our passing was not clear and we lacked major opportunities up front.”
