I see what you’re saying. I can make a case for Italy (they’ve played the toughest schedule, to date, and haven’t lost), but as you allude, there’s a counter argument.

Spain, though, is the #1 team in the world (Germany is #3), though we’ve been calling the Germans the favorites.

I’m Italian and even I think that ranking is too high, just based on their results. They show flashes of greatness, but mental lapses have cost them dearly. Torres had quite a few chances in the first game and theyve blown two leads already. Russia should be third and Portugal should be five, they just happened to draw the #1 team in the world for the first match.
