Either way, Gruenebaum gets a starting spot. Hesmer would start for any team in this league. I'd just question his durability seeing as how this is the second time in two years that he's been out for a prolonged period.

When I made my mock-list for the expansion draft at the end of last season, Gruenebaum was my GK pick for Montreal. Every time I've seen him play, he's impressed me. He's not the average backup keeper, and he's been in the league long enough to know how to succeed. It's just a shame he's been stuck behind Hesmer for four or five years. Columbus is definitely sitting pretty with their goalkeeping... maybe the only spot on the field you can say that about. If Hesmer returns and stays healthy, and Lampson continues to develop well in the reserves, maybe Gruenebaum will see an exit from C-bus and a starting spot with another team in need.

How good has Andy Gruenebaum been this year? Chad Marshall hasn't been himself, Dilly Duka's been injured, the new DPs have been good but not great, Eddie Gaven has been hot some games but not every week, and yet the Crew stand in great position to qualify for MLS Cup. I'm tempted to go back through the seasn and see how many points Gruenebaum is responsible for. Either by preserving a draw and getting a single point or coming up big and helping the Crew hang on for a win and not lose those precious points, I have to imagine Gruenebaum's pretty high. Take him away and put a below-average GK in there, and the Crew are somewhere in the Philly/Toronto neighborhood.

I remember sitting at first kick in Colorado dreading that Will Hesmer's injury would doom the team. now, it's anything but that. It may sound like heresy to some back in Columbus, but is it possible that Gruenebaum is playing better than Hesmer would have. Easily the best surprise for the Crew this year, and easily the Crew's MVP.
