U.S. coach Pia Sundhage talks about the big start

United States v Canada

U.S. women’s coach Pia Sundhage says this year’s Olympic team is better than the one four years ago – which finished covered in golden glory.

This year’s version sure had a better start, as the offense came alive Wednesday in a 4-2 win over France. Four years ago the Olympic adventure started on a real downer, a loss to Norway.

Sundhage talked about it in her post-game comments yesterday.

She also addressed her choices of leaving some veterans on the bench to start:

I think we put on the best team today. I’ve said from the very beginning, this team with the bench we have, [players] can come off the bench and be game-changers. If you look at Carli Lloyd, she did well. She scored that goal and she changed the game. She didn’t start the game, but she finished it. We have depth on the bench, so if you talk about having a good team it’s important to show the players that they have chances. This time I think we did really well in the second half with players coming off the bench.”

The entire Sundhage post-game press conference transcript is here.

OK, but please substitute sooner when necessary so we don’t see any more two goal deficits before the “finishers” get onto the pitch. Or perhaps start those players that are ready to play. Thank you.
