Alex Morgan shows off her Manchester United colors

Jul 30, 2012, 1:10 PM EDT

Not sure what this picture Alex Morgan just posted on her Twitter page might do for her larger Q Quotient. Maybe nothing.

But there is a segment of the population who will wince a mighty wince at seeing U.S. Soccer’s burgeoning scoring superstar – Have you seen those crazy-whack numbers she’s posting? – in a Manchester United jersey.

Manchester United is a global brand, of course, one of the world’s king-daddy clubs. (And not just in soccer, but all sports).

But like all dominant brands (Yankees, Duke basketball, Notre Dame football, etc.), along with the rolling waves of grand recognition and success comes a competing tsunami of red-faced animus.

You know what I mean; lots of people cannot stand the Yankees, Duke basketball, Notre Dame football, etc.

(MORE: Why Saturday’s U.S. win was vital in the bigger picture of the Olympic gold chase)

Maybe in Morgan’s case, everyone will just realize the young U.S. goal-getter is simply jazzed about playing at such a storied ground, Old Trafford, home to mighty Man United!  (I’m guessing it will go that way.)  Her U.S. Olympic soccer team meets North Korea there in Tuesday’s final group stage contest.

The Americans have already qualified for elimination play.

Sorry NBC, ND is NOT an elite brand name anymore, and most people know it. Shameful self promotion…

    • Steve Davis - Jul 30, 2012 at 5:43 PM

I think we all know ND is the quintessential love to hate ‘em CFB team. Right? If you can think of a better one, please let me know. Nothing to do with NBC … but thanks for playing.

Playing devil’s advocate here: USWNT member(s) get in trouble for taking pictures without clothes on, but now it seems wrong Alex Morgan is doing something inappropiate for taking a picture wearing a ManU jersey. In that case, she’s better off taking pictures with few or no clothes at all and laugh all the way to the bank. Just saying…

I can’t think of anything to say here that won’t sound somehow sexist. So I’ll just say thanks for posting this pic.

stackhousesoccer- that sounded sexist! LOL…best thing was not to say anything at all (grin)

    Cowboys

@ sbilyeu5- Red carded for being out of place.

    • Steve Davis - Jul 31, 2012 at 9:54 AM

I think sbilyeu5 meant that the Cowboys should have been noted as a “love to hate ‘em” team. I think.

All these soccer (yes soccer, not football) stories on PST and the one that gets the most comments is the one that features a picture of a chick to lure us in and then most of the comments are about football.

Not a surprise but clearly evidence that soccer is indeed dead in the U.S.A.

    @ bbk1000

“All these soccer stories on PST and the one that gets the most comments is the one that features a picture of a chick to lure us in”

    –ROTFLOL–

Welcome to our football talk area!

…so you were easily lured by the chick picture and even posted. I guess it worked! – LoL-

“Not a surprise but clearly evidence that soccer is indeed dead in the U.S.A.”

    wishful thinking or simply blind?

Stevie Wonder would be able to see and contradict what you are saying. It’s clearly evident where you are coming from.

Thanks for posting in our NBC football blog which it did not existed before. (wink)

I’d bang Alex Morgan like there’s no tomorrow

  10. footballer4ever - Aug 3, 2012 at 1:43 AM

@ geo91- you are quite the “charmer” type, huh!? I am sure Alex Morgan will dig you. ROTFLOL
