Video: one very wacky goal from Sporting Kansas City

Aug 2, 2012, 11:55 AM EDT

There are header goals … and then there are header goals.

Check out this one from Sporting Kansas City’s draw with English Premier League side Stoke City last night in the heartland.

Congratulations, Kyle Miller. You may play a long, long time and you’ll almost certainly not score another one like this.

(You can watch the entire match, or you can cheat and go all the way to stoppage time, to the 2 hour, 10 minute mark of the video to see SKC’s equalizer.)

No wackier than Graham Zusi’s little chip shot over a goalie’s head, said goalie doing exactly what this lad did: playing too far up in the box instead of staying back by his goal and letting his back line do what they get paid to do. That said: congratulations, Kyle! You gave us a bright spot in a string of recent problem games.

A point of contention: I DO NOT understand why Dick Vermes continues to start Bunbery in anything, even a gimme game like this one. SKC’s bench provided a very entertaining game and played like they really want to move into the starting lineup. Bunbery went out like he usually does: touches the ball, dribbles a couple of times, loses the ball or passes it off instead of attacking, and then looks around like he wants another paycheck. I dearly hope this means that C J Sapong will start Saturday night. At least he runs, dribbles, and attacks like he wants to score and to win!
