Getty Images Looks like Thursday’s Olympic women’s final in soccer will be played in front of a full stadium.
And what a stadium it is: famed Wembley Stadium, where the United States will meet Japan in a do-over of the 2011 Women’s World Cup final in Germany.
FIFA says 5,000 tickets have been sold today (as “today” is pretty much over in London, that’s probably about the cap on it). Total sales so far according to FIFA’s Twitter feed are now 83,000. Capacity for soccer is about 90,000.
The 1966 World Cup final sits at the top of a long list of historic events inside the ground, which was remodeled and reopened in 2007. It remains home to England’s national side as well as the FA Cup Final and semifinals, The Football League Cup Final, The FA Community Shield, The Football League playoffs and more.

The attendances for all the games held outside of Wembley (except for the British games) were really terrible – I guess they overestimated the demand for women’s soccer tickets. I read that for the earlier games they ended up giving away most tickets. I wonder why they didn’t hold the games in the London stadiums?

@NYG Are you saying a Canadian/Japanese gold medal match would be a better game? Laughing.

It would not be as good of game as Can v Usa game was but it would be the “proper “gold medal game. Anyone saying the Americans deserved to beat Canada is clearly biased.

Hey NYG, when you say “proper” gold medal game, are you saying that Canada would’ve won even if Tancredi had been “properly” sent off for stomping the head of a USA player in the 55th minute with the score tied 1-1? Now that would really be something!

Canada played a remarkable game and no one is denying that. There were times where i, as a goalkeeper, was like “get rid of the ball you are gonna get called!!!!” and she did. Abby Wambach is known for counting outloud the amount of time the goalkeeper is taking by showing her hand counting while saying it aloud for the ref to hear. Goalkeepers know that there is a time frame. She took 22 seconds at one point.
My point is Canada was doing the exact thing their coach claimed the USWNT does “illegally” but they had PLENTY of what should have been called fouls/yellow cards/ red card …stomping on carli lloyds face, alex morgan in the box twice tripped from behind w no ball play and megan rapinoe took more fouls than anyone)…
Canada had PLENTY of illegal tactic breaks that should have been fouls. It just so happens it was the one player who was wasting time everytime she had the ball…the keeper. She was warned a few times.
Whatever the case a goal wasnt scored on THAT call. It was the handball in the box. take a ball to the face and play. NO ONE throws their hand up to stop a ball. YOU HEAD IT OR TAKE IT.The USWNT didnt let a call last year stop them and they didnt complain the entire time. They moved and scored and play.
Bottom line….she took too long the entire game and she was called for it. Watch it again and count and almost every time she was over 16sec to get rid of it. Abby used her head and knew the rule and it played well….
