Hope Solo was nothing short of outstanding in the Olympic gold medal match, rising in the moments that mattered as her U.S. women’s team claimed the Wembley Stadium night against Japan.

So, she’s got the skills and chops at an elite athletic level, clearly. She is good.

But you know what else Solo is good at? Creating drama, courting controversy and attracting extra shares of attention.

Even in the stirring dash for London gold, Solo’s Twitter kerfuffle briefly threatened to become the story.

Now drops the latest Solo drama, this one connecting past and present.

The “past” is a turbulent relationship with former United States coach Greg Ryan. It all blew up in the 2007 Women’s World Cup as Solo spoke out with significant collateral damage. She blasted Ryan’s choice of Briana Scurry in goal for an important match. It was all very public and quite unbecoming for everyone involved.

Five years later in her new book, “Solo: A Memoir of Hope,” the goalkeeper and former Dancing with the Stars contestant alleges that Ryan shoved her in a meeting at the team’s hotel in China.

Ryan, now the women’s coach at Michigan, refuted those allegations Tuesday. He said in a statement:

This allegation is completely false. I did not shove or push Hope as I’ve been accused in her book. I would have been terminated immediately by USA Soccer had this allegation been true. I have openly discussed the contents of the meeting and this is the first time that this accusation has been brought to light.

“Hope was disappointed that I benched her for the semifinals, but it was the right move for the team. It was discussed with team leaders, and they stood by my decision.”

I talked to someone who was close to the team at the time, staying in the team hotel, in fact. This person knew of no such incident.

Does that mean it didn’t happen? No. But in my mind it casts some level of doubt, at least, because this stuff gets around.

I also talked to Jenna Pel, our women’s soccer authority at ProSoccerTalk. Pel says Ryan has a point about immediate dismissal had anyone attached to U.S. Soccer gotten any hint of such a unacceptable thing. She noted a similar situation in WPS, although details remain murky even today.

I get the feeling we haven’t heard the last of this one.

With the book out, the drama won’t be fading any time soon which is unfortunate for everyone, including us fans of the team.

Her timing sucks! And she is an OVER-EXPOSED Drama-Queen. If we don’t hear anything from her until Rio…it will be too soon!

Hope is such an awesome soccer player. Maybe not such an awesome person.

  4. tonyricemajorharris - Aug 15, 2012 at 1:55 PM

    Hey Hope- “f**k you!”

  5. psousa1 - Aug 15, 2012 at 2:26 PM

Olympics are over. She is feeling irrelevant. Unless she is posing in Playboy time for her to go away.

  6. cozboogie - Aug 15, 2012 at 2:40 PM

Maybe Hope should have read the book after the ghost-writer wrote it.

  7. cheers4ablumpkin - Aug 15, 2012 at 2:47 PM

I don’t get what such the big deal. I’ll still put it to hope. Shes got amazing looks

Two things about Ryan’s statement calls into question his judgement. First, he states: “Hope was disappointed that I benched her for the semifinals, but it was the right move for the team.” It was never the “right move for the team.” Before the Brazil game, it was clearly the wrong move – all you needed to do was observe how Solo interacted with her defense and the opponents’ attackers in the previous two games to see that she was the right person to be in the goal. After the Brazil game — all you needed to do was observe the score to see that Scurry should not have been in the goal.

“It was discussed with team leaders, and they stood by my decision.” What is a Manager doing discussing personnel moves with the players? Of course they will want Scurry – they had played with her a long time. It was his decision to make. Putting it to “team leaders” shows he was not the Team Leader that a Manager must be. Of course, he was out of work shortly after this ill-fated decision.

Or maybe she ran her mouth off at the coach like she did on Twitter on Chastain. Maybe she should learn to shut the hell up and just go with the flow. You don’t win all battles. Learn to shut up when you need to.

Whoever is advising Hope needs to learn a new job skill, because the job they’re doing now won’t last long. This kid needs to quit thinking that if she’s not in the news or on the tabloid front pages, she’s irrelevant. People would rather, Hope, that you are seen publicly for the right reasons. And this isn’t it. You’re damaging your reputation. The “shock jock” fad has long passed in case you didn’t hear.

Hope Solo …. spoiled little brat, liar, creator of turmoil, and nobody that any parent should want their child to emulate. Her actions off the soccer field are a total disgrace and she should NOT be associated in any way with anything that represents the USA.

  11. footballer4ever - Aug 15, 2012 at 5:42 PM

HOPE, you are one hopeless, self conceited, drama queen, attention-craving , fake person who has let her “fame” get to her head. To accuse someone of a grave action n a book rather than the proper channel is someone calculative and looking to bring attention to your book at no cost. Your beauty has carried you farther than what your soccer skills deserve.

Is there any way Hope Solo can just go away? My God, she’s been trying for years to be the next Mia Hamm and it ain’t gonna happen. Simply, she has no class. None….. She’s vain and vindictive and a bigger drama queen than anyone you can name. If she’s not the center of attention, she’s just not happy. Some talent just speaks for itself. Some people let their actions speak for them. She’s so narcissistic she actually believes people give a rat’s butt about reading her “memoirs”. Memoirs? At her age? Forget hoping she goes away until Rio. I just hope she goes away.

The comments here are GREAT. Ive been waiting for more people to see how egotistical this person is. She is becoming the equivalent to Mayweather as far as being self-absorbed goes. As many have said already…just go away already.

    • handsofsweed - Aug 20, 2012 at 7:14 PM

Really. The title of her book made me want to vomit.

  14. jason9696 - Aug 15, 2012 at 7:42 PM

I wouldn’t believe a word this chick says. It’s too bad because she would be so much more attractive if she just kept her mouth shut. I feel sorry for her boyfriend if she has one.

  15. footballer4ever - Aug 15, 2012 at 10:34 PM

Somehow, somewhere, Curry must be saying “Karma is a Bi@7ch” after what Solo did to her. I expect grave consequences follows to her actions without the affected coach having to do anything about it. Hope Solo, i hope you fade away into the land of the forgotten soon and may you end up solo in your life.

  16. congocash - Aug 16, 2012 at 5:34 AM

All the goal keepers ive known were a little “off”….. The position seems to attract a certain type… Or it turns u into a certain type… Not sure.

  17. footballer4ever - Aug 16, 2012 at 2:12 PM

@ congocash. – one thing is for goalkeepers to be “off”, but Solo is more than off, she’s “offside” by her actions and should be “red-carded”, if not booted off.

  18. bgix - Aug 21, 2012 at 7:13 PM

The one thing these comments tell me is that there is a huge double standard here.

Does Hope have an ego? Yep, and it keeps getting her into trouble. But it is not out of line of dozens of male athletes. Usain Bolt anybody? TO? Chad Ocho-Cinco? That’s just recently.

Hope is a great athlete, and she has the ego to match. And amoungst these comments we have her called “Drama Queen”, “Spoiled Brat” and “B*tch”. People want to to “Go away until Rio”. Well, she carries our flag, and is an indispensable part of the team, and Ryan ABSOLUTELY made the wrong call in benching her for during the ’07 Cup, and if the people commenting here didn’t expect women athletes to behave like meek stay-in-the-place good little girls, they would realize that.

Do you bench LeBron or Kobe Shaq because their ego is too big? Not if you want to win, which is what sport is all about. The real B*tches are the men commenting here that she would be good for a role in the hay, but that she needs to keep her mouth shut.

  19. footballer4ever - Aug 22, 2012 at 10:44 PM

@ bgix- Geez! Are you done hyperventilating yet?

Hate to break it down to you, but Hopeless Solo is not indispensable and never will be.
