Oh look, Robbie Keane scored again

Someone should have told us this Robbie Keane fellow was good.

The Los Angeles Galaxy didn’t have Landon Donovan — he was doing his thang down in Mexico — but they didn’t need their star as Keane netted his 11th goal in 20 games and helped his club to a 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew. (The Crew were playing their first game since the passing of Kirk Urso.)

Keane’s tally, which came after Sean Franklin abused a Crew defender and crossed the ball, was his seventh since July 8.

Eddie Gaven nearly netted a game-winner in the 94th minute. That would have been special.

The cartwheel, somersault, gun firing goal celebration was completely unneccesary. I don’t blame Keane for playing hard and scoring, that’s what he is paid to do. But when your opponent buried a 22 year old teammate 4 days ago, you don’t showboat after a goal. There will be plenty of other goals, many more significant, in Keane’s career where he can do any damn celebration he likes. This was a time to show more restraint.

I get that things are still pretty fresh in Columbus but to say that Keane celebrating a goal was somehow inappropriate is ridiculous. It’s not fair to say that teams shouldn’t play the same way because of the situation. If that were the case then this game shouldn’t have been played and I think that would have been wrong as well.

“It’s not fair to say that teams shouldn’t play the same way because of the situation.”

I didn’t say they should not play the same way. In fact, I specifically said I don’t blame Keane for playing hard and scoring. RIF. What I did say was the goal celebration was unnecessary. You do NOT have to showboat after a goal to win the game and/or to play it to the best of your abilities. No game was ever won by a goal celebration performance. No one expects Keane to attend Urso’s funeral, but skipping the showboating after scoring is showing simple respect to a fallen player and, most importantly, to Urso’s family. Are you claiming that if Keane merely hugged his teammates, skipped the performance, and made his way back to center line, that would have prevented LA from holding on to the tie?

I am saying that Keane’s celebration was in the course of normal play in that he does it after every goal he scores. The celebration was not disrespectful to anyone but rather a celebration of his and his teammates success. One of the great things about MLS is that they don’t censor goal celebrations and player individuality like some of the other leagues in this country (NFL). One of the best things about sports is that it is independent of so many of the terrible things in life and provides a respite for those involved / watching. To take part of that away is misguided and detracts from the overall quality of the experience.
