Should we start talking about the possibility that Sporting Kansas City would host the U.S. Open Cup championship and the MLS Cup final in the same season?
OK, it’s probably a little early for that. But can we just acknowledge the increasing possibility, at least?
Following SKC’s road win Saturday afternoon at Toronto, Peter Vermes’ team has a five-point lead in the Eastern Conference title chase. The new playoff format awards the league’s championship match to the finalist with a better record.
So, yes … it’s getting interesting. Having the top record going into the playoffs doesn’t assure that you’ll be sleeping at home on MLS Cup eve. But it does give your team the very best odds, and that’s something.
Sporting KC captured the U.S. Open Cup crown inside Livestrong Sporting Park two weeks ago.
While you think about all that, here is Kei Kamara’s game-winner Saturday at BMO Field, where SKC gathered up its seventh road win this year.
