Alexi Lalas devoted the first half of his kinda-daily mini-pod “The Shot” to yesterday’s big talker from RFK Stadium. Maybe you heard about it.
If not, no worries! Just scroll up or scroll down. Go ahead – you can’t miss it.
Here’s what Lalas, a former U.S. international, MLS general manager and now a TV analyst, says about yesterday’s re-kick kerfuffle at RFK Stadium, where Dwayne De Rosario was asked for a do-over on a critical penalty kick – and it did not work out so well for him.
(Oh, by the way … Lalas nails it here!)
Six-second goalkeeper violations, defenders grabbing on corners or encroachment are all undeniably against the rules. Yet they happen all the time and are rarely called. But it’s like speeding; It’s a calculated risk. Telling the cop that everyone else is doing it is not an excuse, especially if you’re going 90 in a 55. Or, as in this case, if you’re already two steps in the box before the PK is even taken. The thing is, there are plenty of actual referee mistakes to scream about. So when players, coaches or fans gripe about a rare, but correct call, it rings hollow. You played the odds and lost. Now take your medicine and move on – and maybe get a Fuzz Buster.”
Lalas also has some thoughts on the first weekend of English Premier League awesomeness in today’s version of The Shot.
But careful! There’s a reference at the end of Lalas’ Shot that involves Whitesnake, vomit and a very regrettable pun. You’ve been warned.

Actually, I think the ref’s worst call of the day might have been the yellow to Williams in the first half.

Today on a Canadian blog, I read how MLS is actually fixing games against teams from Canada. They cited the call in the women’s olympics 6 second rule call as further proof. From claims that it’s never happened in history/ or some made up date, while ignoring the 3-4 times their keeper held the ball for 15-17 seconds each, to MLS suspending a “key player” on a Canadian team before a match with an American team- these people are showing their true paranoid colors.
I really hope their disease doesn’t spread; we dont need their self induced paranoia. We have enough to deal with trying to keep our league growing , along with the sport. No need to create fake rage with pop culture bitterness where it’s not needed.

Well, yeah … but that’s probably all true. I heard that the guy who arranges all the fixes usually hides out in the grassy knoll. Or somewhere out in Area 51.

Just to let you know, area 51 does exist just that ET is not making long distance calls home from there (Uncle Sam didn’t pay his intergalactic phone bill). But anyway, the PK retake was correct just strange. As to the Canadian conspiracy theories, well, I really got nothing other than where was Tancredi’s suspension? I agree with Taylor, there is so many other calls to complain about rather than one that was correct. Lahoud should have been gone, Hack was playing with fire by keeping him in.
