Highlights and interviews: U.S. women crush Costa Rica

Well, in terms of drama and spectacle, it wasn’t exactly U.S. winning the Gold at Wembley.

But if the United States just needed a designated victim to kick off Gold Medal victory tour, Costa Rica is probably is good as any.

The U.S. women clobbered the helpless Costa Ricans, 8-0, Saturday in their first contest since the 2012 London Olympics. Abby Wambach and MMegan Rapinoe scored twice each in front of a sell-out crowd of 13,208 at Rochester’s Sahlen’s Stadium.

Here are the highights – a bunch of them – as Pia Sundhage starred the same 11 who were on the field to begin the recent gold medal match against Japan at famed Wembley Stadium.

Of course, the afternoon was poignant because of Pia Sundhage’s pre-game revelation that she would soon step down as U.S. manager after five years in the position.
