San Jose can set “cruise” on Western Conference title chase

We visited last week about San Jose’s strong chances of trotting on home with the Western Conference title safely in pocket.

Well, last night’s resounding 4-0 win over hapless Chivas USA added a little more ammo to that argument. Yes, everyone is getting their piece of “resounding” against Chivas USA now. But that’s beside the point. Here, the point is the points earned.

Real Salt Lake has six matches to make up a seven-point deficit. That’s going to be difficult for an RSL side that simply has not been in 2012 what we remember from the three previous seasons.

Seattle has eight matches to make up a nine-point deficit – which is actually a 10-point deficit. That’s because San Jose holds all the tiebreaker edges (and significantly so) in goals scored and goal difference.

Even the Galaxy, as well as Bruce Arena’s side is playing now, cannot like its chances of lassoing and reeling in the Earthquakes. They have six matches to make up a 10-point gap. Translation, they would probably have to win a full four more matches than San Jose, which has tiebreaker edges over the boys from L.A., as well.
