@tylerbetts

If you are a proud and diehard follower of any national team, there is not great hurt or disappointment than not qualifying to a world cup. The US has not been lucky in making it to each WC since 1990, but it's not hard to realize how different Concacaf federation is. Not to discredit lower seeded national teams, but really, the economy and lack of infrastructure and abilitie$ does not do any good to imprive the quality of football in the area. What mostly carries those national teams is the pride which sometimes can replace the lack of tangible things.

One thing is for sure, every other team will be more satisfied that the US team makes it than that other team south of the border in any given day.

I do have an odd perspective. This is my first World Cup Cycle as a diehard follower. I was a casual fan, but never paid attention to things like how the US qualified for the World Cup - I'd just follow them in the World Cup. In fact, it wasn't until I did some research after the 2010 World Cup that I even knew how qualifying worked.

Maybe that adds to my feeling of "meh" and "hey, we still control our destiny" and "yes, bad result, but nothing long-lasting to worry about". My naivety of it all.

I mean - it's not like this is CAF, where there is no forgiveness for mistakes and no margin for error.

I root for two federations, where i was born and raised, and the USMNT where i developed and currently live in. I've felt the hurt and disappointment in not qualifying for various WC. The US has not missed a WC since 1990; but that does not mean, as some people might think, it's a a certainty. Look what happen to the "motherland" of football, England, they missed the 1994 USA world cup. I am not English, but not having England play in the 1994 WC was a real disappointment to the tournament.

It's that time when Klinsmann has to do to win a friendly match on foreign soil, is not the same as winning a World Cup qualifying match in a foreign land, is another environment, is another level, is another doubt game.No USA reach the finals, but that level will suffer greatly.

So far "that moment" has always ended in a favorable final result as you nicely noted it; However, when the US experience "that moment" in a negative manner which might prevent us from participating in a World Cup, that is when people will realize how detrimental and backlash that will be to our sport. In order to avoid that, we must be the "Lexus" of football, always in search of perfection, but most importantly, performing consistently. These high rollercoasters performances can be quite a ride.
