Stoke City utility knife Geoff Cameron about to play yet another position?

No resolution is in site to the ongoing debate about whether Geoff Cameron’s versatility will eventually be an asset for the man’s U.S. national team ambitions – or if “utility knife” usage around Stoke City might prevent him from realizing full potential at any one position.

Cameron toggled between midfielder and center back during his days in Houston.

He gained a foothold on starter duty along Jurgen Klinsmann’s back line at about the same time a prolonged transfer summer drama slogged slowly along. He eventually did get that spot at Stoke City, where we assumed Cameron would man a center back role.

But manager Tony Pulis has used Cameron in the midfield so far. Thus, the debate rages. If this goes on, can Klinsmann continue to deploy a starter at center back if he never plays the spot for his club? Honestly, that does look like a stretch.

And now this!

A new wrinkle, one to further muddy the Cameron positional waters: it looks like the rising U.S. international may fill in at … wait for it … right back Saturday against Chelsea.

First choice right-back Andy Wilkinson faces a possible ban the Football Association’s disciplinary commission for allegedly elbowing Manchester City’s Mario Balotelli last week. (Go ahead, say it out loud. We’re all thinking it. Yes, there is a line around the block of people who would pay money for the chance to elbow Mario Balotelli … but this is beside the point.)

Cameron has lined up at right back in practice this week.

Perhaps he should wait until after Saturday’s match. That thing looks rather heavy.
