No. 1 ranked University of Akron fell Sunday in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals as the Zips went down to Creighton.
That means Porter will start thinking about his new position, as head coach of the Portland Timbers, a little sooner than expected.
Back in late August, the Timbers name Porter as the replacement for John Spencer, who had been terminated earlier in the summer. But the hook was in the timing; Porter would finish out his highly successful seven-year tenure with Akron.
Porter lost just 19 times in 158 matches at Akron.
The plan around Jeld-Wen Field was always to introduce Porter formally during a December news conference. Now the club has the option of having the formal press event a little earlier.
