Something Becks couldn't do was consistently pull TV ratings for the league, they still flounder and it's the one worry I have about the league. I'm of the uneasy opinion that when MLS TV deals are renewed post WC2014 they'll take pretty big steps forward, eclipsing the step that the current NBC deal provided by a fair margin.

TV money is the driver of US sports and more than anything financially MLS needs partners that are willing to promote and sell the product. NBC Sports has been a real boost, especially compared to ESPN's treatment. Fwiw I like ESPN broadcast, they just don't sell or promote it. MLS needs it's own weekly review show, human interest stories, etc. NBC Sports got into the act quickly with MLS 36.
