CARSON, Calif. – The man is still tip-toeing the fringes of his national team’s pool.
And he surely would trade any individual award for a spot in Saturday’s MLS Cup final.
But San Jose scoring star Chris Wondolowski does, at least, finally have an MLS Most Valuable Player trophy to his name.
As everyone expected, “Wonder Wondo” captured the league’s 17th MVP honor this morning. Wondolowski led the league in scoring for a third consecutive season, although he lost out on MVP balloting in 2010 and 2011 (to David Ferreira and Dwayne De Rosario.)
But voters couldn’t miss the obvious selection this year, not when the Earthquake’s 29-year-old forward matched an MLS single season record with 27 strikes.
Wondolowski will receive his trophy during a presentation later this afternoon at the Home Depot Center.
FYI, San Jose’s top goal-getter ranks 20th now in all-time in MLS scoring, two tallies behind longtime L.A. Galaxy man Cobi Jones.
Wondolowski absolutely chewed through the competition in 2012 voting, as you can see:
