Just when it seemed longtime U.S. center back Oguchi Onyewu, having now lost his footing in the national team rotation, had found a road to career recovery, this bit of sour news:
Spain’s financially troubled Malaga, Onyewu’s team, has been fined and suspended from European competition for next year for failing to meet all of its payroll and tax obligations in a timely manner.
Onyewu has played very little first-team soccer since his second stint with Standard Liege back in 2009. Since then, injuries have prevented the two-time U.S. World Cup veteran from catching a solid, starting foothold at five club addresses, including Malaga.
Lately, he has gotten into a few games with the club, making his first appearance in a Champions League contest against A.C. Milan, one of his former clubs. Unable to break into the starting lineup, Onyewu’s best chance to play is attached to his club’s ability to get more games.
That’s not an option for next year, apparently.
