It demonstrates both his strength and his weakness. He had no business taking that shot. It was “hopeful” at best. Then he gets a lucky deflection and it drops into the goal over the keepers head.

The US desperately needs a guy like Dempsey to take those shots that no one else on the team will take. At the same time, it’s maddening to see him make a poor decision like that (the same type of decision that makes him prone to dangerous give-ways in the midfield).

I’d love to see Dempsey playing forward for the US, which would mitigate his weaknesses and maximize his strengths.

I look away from the screen for a minute after he comes into the game, thinking nothing important will happen until he at least has a proper warm-up. I really should have known better.
