I apologize, its not my intent to offend, but if Montero was good enough to play a consistent role in Colombia he would never have been in the MLS. I think what the MLS is doing is great, and some day they will be able to compete on a level with the best south American teams, but you are insane if you truly believe that the best teams in the MLS would be atop the Colombian first division…. You clearly don’t watch football enough globally. It’s the same with the US national team. It’s nice to see the team develop and hope it becomes a quasi-contender in 20 or so years. However, Colombia, Argentina, and Brazil are head and shoulders above what the US can put out there now. However, the US is a sleeping giant, if the federation ever had the stones to put the US in Conmembol instead of the weak Concacaf they would develop quicker on the world stage and be a serious contender instead of a fraud media darling….not trying to ruffle feathers, just honesty. One of my best friends is a starter in the MLS and he wouldn’t last 15 minutes in a real LatAm league…

Yes indeed talking about a weak and lesser MLS league, They are still playing on a much slower pace ,no speedy combinations and you see only a few players with some individual skills.
The MLS is still years away from the big boys in soccer.

Colombia as a national team and now a local club league is just sooooooooo far ahead of anything MLS can even wish to have that Montero wants one last shot to see if he can play in a real league and get to play for a real WC qualifier. I don’t blame him, if this works he can make a lot more money. If it doesn’t he can always come back to the massively lesser MLS and be a star in a weak league.

Just this past week, Tim Vickery was discussing that Montero was off the Natl. team radar due to playing in MLS.

For the very reasons that Dan brought up, maybe Seattle feels this loan will be good for the maturity of his game and overall approach. He is talented, but tends to disappear and just float around the pitch at times.

I agree… but Sigi has always had an uneasy relationship with Montero. It seems like he benches him a couple times each season. Heck, he pulled him early from the playoffs matches when they desperately needed goals. It looks to me like Sigi doesn’t trust Freddy to produce when it’s crunch time. It may be that this Seattle was looking to move him one way or another, and this was the best offer they got.

I don’t get what this does for Seattle.

They don’t get the DP spot back unless the option to buy is taken.
They don’t get any allocation money.
They don’t get any talent in return.

Yes, they have other players who can produce. But replacing a guy and not getting value for him? Seems very odd. If he gets hurt any time in that loan, Seattle gets him back, hobbled by injury with nothing to show for it.

I don’t get it at all for Seattle.

Not out of the blue for me. I thought he was going. Lethal definitely describes him, but he could be shut down pretty easily by the good defenses and had many short comings ( speed, size, etc. )
See the playoffs the last four years for good examples.

Will be interesting in Seattle. I wouldn’t mind seeing Zakuani moving forward.

Wow, kinda out of nowhere it seems? Fans of other teams in the West certainly won’t miss him! The guy was flat-out lethal at times.

No doubt that Seattle will have something else up their sleeve, but it’s also kind of a bummer to be losing a few of the more dynamic MLS players lately. Espinoza, Montero, Becks, Donovan? and to a lesser degree a guy like Pappa, while a bit underwhelming still had some good skill.
