Wigan manager Roberto Martinez let it be known that he would not waste a bit of time with Roger Espinoza, working the former Sporting Kansas City midfielder right into the mix.
Espinoza received his work visa on Thursday and was clear to play, having signed a two-and-a-half year deal at the DW Stadium.
And the Wigan manager did indeed include Espinoza in the 18-man selection for yesterday’s FA Cup contest with Bournemouth. (The official team sheet from Wigan Athletic is here.)
“Usually players would have more time preparing for their debut and getting used to their new team-mates, but Roger is so desperate to play as soon as he can that we hope to see him on the pitch on Saturday,” Martínez said.
But in the end, in a close contest, the manager elected not to use the Honduran international, signed immediately as the transfer window opened last week. The manager did use a bunch of youngsters, and you could say that he paid the price in a 1-1 draw. In fact, Wigan needed a late goal just to earn that.
Next chance, then, will be Wigan’s Jan. 12 Premier League contest at Craven Cottage against Fulham. Three days later, Wigan has its FA Cup Third Round replay at Bournemouth. Given the tight schedule (Wigan plays once again four nights later, this time at home to Sunderland, it seems certain that Espinoza would get into one of those matches, at very least.
