Steve - the draft has me thinking about what type of player a team wants on the field in MLS. For example, last season mls soccer posted some data on chances and big chances created over the season.

If you look at how much these "chances" cost http://tinyurl.com/b47fygt - here's my question about a player like Robbie Keane. He creates a chance ever 45 minutes and big chances cost his team about $310k per.

A player like Benny Feilhaber - who does not get nearly as much love in the press, creates chances ever 55 minutes but costs $50k per big chance (a bargain at 1/6th the price). There are several other players on this list, in his price category who are also about as productive as him.

I know there is some calculation about name-brand recognition but presumably these "chances" are some indicator of excitement created by a player (which appeals to the fan) but is also a measure of the players productivity.

So, why are LA so willing to sign on players like Robbie - are they just trying to show off or are they really just overpaying for European name brands?
