The Seattle Sounders: now with more Shalrie Joseph

Man, sometimes Friday afternoons in Major League Soccer are just the best. According to a shocked Joshua Meyers, Chivas USA midfielder Shalrie Joseph walked into Seattle Sounders training looking ready to trial with Osvaldo Alonso and the rest of the Pacific Northwest crew. At the moment, his rights remain with Chivas USA.

Joseph seems like a likely person to move on from the Southern California team he joined last season due to the Goats’ policy of getting non-Mexican-Americans the heck out of Dodge, but it comes as a surprise that the trial happened so quietly.

Joseph isn’t the player he was when he dominated the midfield for New England during so much of the late 2000s but he’s still a force and would fit in nicely with Sigi Schmid’s club. The Grenada international has also played center back, a position where the Sounders could desperately use some help.

We’ll keep updating this post as we find out more information.

But for now, how about some jokes on Twitter!

Trade talks are “confirmed,” whatever that means:

Go Shalrie! Love that guy. He deserves better than Chivas. He’s been a faithful servant of MLS and a huge part of its growth.

I would love Shalrie Joseph in Seattle.

At 34 and evidently past his prime, I don’t see Joseph being anything other than cover for either Alonso or the CBs. His salary is high, he’s not worth a DP contract, and he’s not what he was during the hey-day of the Revs.

Joseph as CB cover, even starter if he’s good enough at that position makes sense to me. Joseph in the MF = non-starter as at this point in his career he offers little going forward and would make a nice DM or holding man. Additionally Sounders have their least needs in the MF with Montero gone up front and a thinned and injured backline.

I don’t have anything against Shalrie Joseph, but where does he fit in the current SSFC roster? Of course, a straight up trade for Servando Carrasco would have me dancing in the streets.
