Tom Sermanni released his roster for the upcoming Algarve Cup in Portugal, and Hope Solo will miss the tournament with a wrist injury that may require surgery.

The good news: This isn’t a new thing and it’s not hugely serious. The American No. 1 damaged ligaments in her left wrist some time ago but it makes sense to get her situation sorted out now. According to a release from U.S. Soccer, “with Women’s World Cup qualifying not until the end of 2014, the team medical staff advised that now would be the time to address the situation.” Goalkeepers Nicole Barnhart, Jill Loyden, and Ashlyn Harris will battle for the starting job next month in Portugal.

So, it’s not the worst thing in the world. But it does make you reflect on the U.S. sans Solo. She is the single most important player on the roster, and the one whose absence creates the biggest drop in talent. It’s both a matter of skill and experience. Consider this: In 2012, Solo started 31 of 32 games. Barnhart was between the pipes during a 4-0 victory over Sweden in the third-place match of the Algarve Cup.

The American women are deep enough that they don’t drop-off significantly skillwise if you replace one of the 10 field players with a second-stringer. They might have to play differently if, say, Abby Wambach wasn’t on the field, but they would be okay. You might be able to make a case that the center backs are thin, but I don’t think it’s as big as the drop from Solo to the No. 2 goalie.

So here’s hoping Solo returns successfully if and when she needs surgery. And let’s pray she doesn’t go down with something more serious. There isn’t much help coming on the horizon.

I can’t believe Jerramy already hurt her!

    I can’t stand this woman.

“…and the one whose absence creates the biggest drop in talent.”
    You’re kidding, right?

I kept looking for indications of sarcasm, but you’re actually serious??? The team is BETTER w/o the drama queen between the pipes. Now, the other players don’t have to tip-toe around the locker room wondering what might set Ms.”It’s all about me” off. My son is a goalie, so I respect and admire how hard they work, how much abuse they take, and how critical they are to a team. But when the 10 players in front of you are all among the top ten players in the WORLD at their positions, your job as goalie is considerably easier. I expect the majority of the media to be fooled by Hope. She plays the victim sooo well. But I expected a LOT more from this blog. C’mon! I’m betting some of ladies are cracking open the champagne that Solo won’t be around and are praying that she never holds the number one spot again. I would LOVE to see the HONEST reaction the rest of the team had to the line, “She is the single most important player on the roster, and the one whose absence creates the biggest drop in talent.”. I’m not sure whether they would laugh in your face Noah or rip you a new one. Even if Solo was half as talented as she, and you, seem to believe she is, it’s just not worth all the baggage she brings along with her. I would be very happy to wager some serious dollars that the US ladies will be just fine without her.

Do not care for her at all! Think she is overrated and a little off in the head!

A real drama queen! Team better off without her. No doubt!

A real drama queen! Not worth the trouble to have around. Get her off the team and it will be better off.

    I don’t know what’s more disturbing.
    a) The fact that Noah Davis once again shows he should not be writing about the USWNT, since all he does is fangirl over its biggest stars.
    b) All your mindless hate towards one of the best goalkeepers in the world just cause she has an eventful personal life and isn’t afraid to voice her opinion through social media.

    Let’s start with A.
Noah, please, the last time you wrote about the USWNT you ended with ‘here’s a video of Alex Morgan’ and this time you end with: “And let’s pray she doesn’t go down with something more serious. There isn’t much help coming on the horizon.”

If you wanna continue to keep on writing about women’s football, by all means, please do.
Might wanna watch a Bundesliga game every once in a while though. Ashlyn Harris plays for Duisburg, a club that has gone bankrupt and had to sell most of their good players. Defense there has been more than shaky, yet Harris manages to keep their losses ‘respectable’, if it wasn’t for her, every game would pretty much end in 0-8, 1-9, maybe 2-6 on a good day.
Do you remember the 2011 WPS? Who was goalkeeper of the year again? That’s right, Ashlyn Harris, and please don’t say that was cause she was playing behind a stacked team, cause then I’ll just have to link you to the PK series in the championship game.

Now what hasn’t Harris been capped yet? That’s an easy one, 3 reasons:
    1) Injuries
    2) Hope Solo
    3) Pia Sundhage’s dislike of bringing in fresh faces.

The goalie position is one of the hardest one’s to crack, especially when you’re behind Hope Solo.
Pia was not the type to take ‘a risk’ with her choice of back-up goalies, so she stuck to what she knew, Loyden and Barnhart, who are both excellent goalies.
Harris would have been capped last week btw, if she hadn’t gotten a minor injury.

So please, don’t insinuate the US is f***ed without Solo, they are not.

    Now on to B:
I’m not even gonna waste time on this. Her ‘off the pitch behaviour’ has NEVER effected her play, so your comments are completely irrelevant.

Mr. Davis it looks like you haven’t been watching the same games the rest of us have, I believe that the games are being won by everyone, but Hope. I’ll give you the fact that Hope is a good goalkeeper, but her attitude is hurting the team. Hope is all about Hope, she doesn’t care about her team, and she is there for one thing and one thing only, herself. For you to say that she the most important person on this team makes me wonder what team you have been watching. Every person on that team brings something to the team. There is not one single person that can win the game on their own. Hope is the last one that can win for this team, and I’m pretty sure they are all glad she is not going to that tournament. They want to play, not get pulled into her drama, which is what she is all about these days. There are other goalies on the team and they are going to do well for this USA Women’s Team. Ashlyn Harris is stepping up to make her presence know, it’s about time that those that make the decisions see that Ashlyn will be a great addition to this team. She has proven herself time and time again, she will do it again.
Hope’s ego has gotten so big, probably because of people like you, that she doesn’t know what is important anymore. I think you need to take a step back and away from writing your articles; your mind is playing tricks on you.
