Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is moving aggressively to tamp down all the rampant speculation that striker Wayne Rooney’s days at Old Trafford were coming to an end.
This was all about Rooney’s absence from the starting lineup as United tumbled out of Champions League play on Tuesday. Well, that and Ferguson’s reputation as a man never afraid to nudge a talented star from the Old Trafford nest. (David Beckham. Cristiano Ronaldo. They were good, you know.)
But Ferguson insists this lineup kerfuffle is much ado over nothing, revealing that his choice was 100 percent tactical. We’ll see. What the Manchester United manager said:
There is no issue between myself and Wayne Rooney. To suggest we don’t talk to each other on the training ground is absolute nonsense. … He understood the reasons [for not playing] completely.”
