MLS Goal of the Week: ProSoccerTalk’s selection

Mar 11, 2013, 4:32 PM EDT

With apologies to Daigo Kobayashi, who shrewdly caught Columbus ‘keeper Andy Gruenebaum a step or so too far from goal and exploited the little opportunity with brutal precision …

And with apologies to Montreal Impact defender Hassoun Camara, who won’t get forward to score too many goals this year – and who certainly won’t score many with the style points attached to an overhead kick …

I’ll go with Jamie Smith’s wonderful curler as my choice for Goal of the Week.

His shot against Philadelphia was not only bold, but technically perfect. Union goalkeeper Zach MacMath had zero chance on this thing:

Strongly disagree with this one. It was a fine strike, technically proficient. However it landed not in the side netting and was shot from quite the angle, an in form keeper would have turned it aside almost routinely.

MacMath has issues, he was a better keeper at the beginning of last year/late the year before. Philly needs a veteran net minder and/or a keeper coach to help straighten him out.

Do not disagree one bit about MacMath. But when I saw the goal, first thing I thought was that no one should fault Philly’s young ‘keeper on this one. That said … great thing about “best goal” debate is the debate; it’s a highly subjective thing. Your opinion is surely just as valid as mine.
