People, places and things we noticed during the weekend that tend to land on the over-done or overly praised side. Not necessarily awful but, you know, just “meh.”

  • Season opening attendance in Chicago
  • Watching Sporting KC in 2013 (inferior to the greatness that was watching SKC in 2012)
  • Overly dramatic post-game press conferences
  • Curious contentment with early season clunkers (“It’s a long season” only goes so far.)
  • Jose Mourinho’s false modesty
  • Concerns over Brad Guzan’s ability to ably replace Tim Howard next week
  • PPG (points per game) in the standings/table
  • Sherjill MacDonald (the poor guy is close to establishing a standing place on this list)
  • Pita chips
  • Screaming at refs after committing obvious fouls (Apparently, too many players believe the laws of the game are “Meh”)
  • Marvell Wynne’s crossing
  • Most of the crossing in MLS
  • Joel Lindpere in spring (he was slow out of the gate last year, too)

PPG is meh in March. Somewhat useful in September. Very Meh in March

PPG is a little silly, BUT…MLS often has very unbalanced schedule. Last year some teams had played 4-6 games more than others. That doesn’t really happen in other leagues. In MLS, a lot of creativity had to be done with the schedule because of new stadium issues and some teams being in extra comps. PPG was useful down the stretch to compare those teams, even though games not played are NOT points in hand.

PPG is awesome. What is “meh” is having a team playing .500 “leading the league”, because they have played 3 more games than everyone else.

I do GET it. … I just see it as a lousy substitute for keeping the schedule a little more balanced in terms of matches played.

Fans have been clamoring for a PPG stat column on the MLS site for years. At the tail end of last season, they finally gave it to us. And they make the standings update in realtime during games, to boot.

I fail to see how it’s “meh”. Any stat that gives us a better indication of how teams are actually doing during the campaign should be welcomed in open arms.

I don’t know, Steve. I find getting clamoring for a less imbalanced schedule a bit “meh”.

I’d rather the league build some flexibility in to allow teams to have rest and competitive advantage for things like CCL.

Plus, having games in hand offers the one thing every fan truly wants – HOPE. Sure, you’re six points out of the playoffs. But you’ve got TWO GAMES IN HAND! Sure, they’re against the best two teams in the league, and on the road. But you’ve got HOPE!

I also find my grammar (getting clamoring?) to be meh.

“Curious contentment with early season clunkers (“It’s a long season” only goes so far.) ”

For LA that was about 20 weeks last year. At 19 weeks they had fewer points than the Timbers.
