Chicago came oh-so-close frustratingly close to closing out a draw Sunday evening in Houston. Considering how things have gone around Frank Klopas’ team this year, and considering that Houston’s BBVA Compass Stadium is about the hardest place in MLS for stealing points, that would have been a fantastic result for the visitors.
But a sneaky little goal for Brad Davis late in Sunday’s match was the game-winner as Houston kept right on Montreal’s backside for MLS Eastern Conference leadership.
Sunday’s 2-1 win extended the Dynamo’s home dominance into record-setting places.
In addition to passing Real Salt Lake to establish the new MLS record home unbeaten streak across all competitions (35 matches and counting), the club is perfect at home this year, collecting all 12 of a possible 12 points at BBVA.
The Houston Chronicle wrote of Houston’s home ground streak this morning. Last loss on home soil: June of 2011.
Dominic Kinnear’s team needed Davis’ late goal, but they were mostly on top of things all afternoon. Chances came and went, many attached somehow to the right foot of recently signed Scottish winger Andrew Driver. Starting once again for the injured Boniek Garcia, he gave the Fire back line trouble throughout a warm afternoon in South Texas.
The full highlight pack is here, including Davis’ late game-winner – one on which young Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson would surely like a re-do:
