Obviously, as the major soccer property closest to Monday’s terrible events in Boston, the New England Revolution and its extended family of players, staff, etc., have been the most affected.
Longtime Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis and his family was especially impacted; Reis’ father-in-law was among those injured in one of two blasts Monday near the Boston Marathon finish lines. Details are here from the L.A. Times. (Reis’ father-in-law lived in Torrance, just south of Los Angeles.)
Meanwhile, the Kraft Family, which owns the New England Revolution and the New England Patriots, will do its part to assist families. The family will match up to $100,000 in recovery and assistance donations.
Geoff Cameron, Stoke City and U.S. international defender, was born and raised just outside of Boston. He talked to The Sun in England about the harrowing few minutes after hearing Monday’s news, about the bombings where he himself had been many times, cheering runners at past Boston Marathons.
Cameron’s two sisters are active in triathlons and he was afraid they might be nearby, running themselves or cheering on fellow runners and friends. Said Cameron:
I switched on the news as I called mom, dad and the family to check they were alright, because some of them work downtown in Boston. …It was tough seeing those graphic sights live, blood on the streets of Boston and wounded people everywhere.
“Thankfully dad answered right away and told me mom was safe and my sisters were okay too. But those few seconds waiting for dad to pick-up were the longest of my life…. It was scary! I was angry, shocked, horrified, sad and scared at the same time.”
Back to the Revolution, there’s some reaction on video here from New England manager Jay Heaps and some of the Revs players, all of whom live in and around Boston.
Finally, ESPN analyst Taylor Twellman, who spent the majority of his professional soccer career with the Revolution, changed his Twitter avatar. Nice touch, man.
