This was the second time in 30 minutes David Luiz tried his luck from distance. The first time came about the same way, with the Chelsea center half given too much room to come forward and blast away. That time Luiz’s shot nailed an unlucky defender, the rebounding rolling all the way back to the center line. The second time, he struck gold.
The replay from behind the goal hints Mark Schwarzer could have done more. And then there’s always the logic we used when analyzing David Alaba’s Champions League goal against Juventus. At a certain distance, shots are coming from so far away, goalkeepers have time to adjust.
Luiz’s strike was so pure, it looks like Schwarzer may have underestimated how much it would move. As he leapt into the save to block with both hands, the shot tails away and into the right side of his goal. Depending on how you wish to analyze the play, Schwarzer could be said to have jumped to, not through, the ball.
But let’s not take anything away from Luiz, who recorded his second league goal of the season. Given all the room he could reasonably want, the Brazilian took his chances. It didn’t take long for one to pay off.
