Just a reminder that we are never very far from our next, silly “handshake row” out of England.
And they tend to involve England center backs. And racism.
On Friday, John Terry refused to shake hands with Football Association chairman David Bernstein; the pair have significant history. (That history is attached to … another England center back and racism.)
At a ceremony Friday to mark the end of Chelsea’s year as holders of the UEFA Champions League trophy, Bernstein successfully shook hands with Chelsea players Bratislav Ivanovic, Fernando Torres and Petr Cech. Terry then refused.
The history: it was Bernstein who made the decision to strip Terry of his England captaincy in 2012 while the Chelsea center back awaited trial on a charge that he racially abused Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match at Loftus Road in West London.
Terry was cleared of criminal charges but the banned for four matches by an FA disciplinary panel.
Amid it all, some of the soccer world waited breathlessly see whether Terry and Rio Ferdinand (brother of Anton) would shake hands.
At the bottom of this BBC piece there are links to each stage of the history on this one.
