Luis Suárez has accepted the violent conduct charge given to him by the English FA this afternoon.
However Suárez now faces a nervous wait to see how long his ban will be, after he denied The FA’s claim that the standard punishment of three matches is clearly insufficient for this offense.
An Independent Regulatory Commission will hear the case tomorrow, Wednesday 24 April, as Suárez will then find out the length of his ban.
The incident at the center of the violent conduct charge occurred in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea, as Suárez bit Blues defender Branislav Ivanovic on his right arm in the 64th minute. The Uruguayan striker — who ironically scored the game-tying goal in stoppage time after the officials failed to spot the offense — has been condemned by the global soccer community, as he finds himself embroiled in yet another scandal.
Suárez was earlier defended by former world boxing champion Mike Tyson for his chomp on Ivanovic’s arm. “He [Suárez] bit someone, it happens. I am sure he will make amends with this guy,” Tyson told the David Glenn radio show. “I made amends with Evander and we got on with our lives.”
By failing to accept that a three-game ban is insufficient for his actions, Suárez will almost certainly be looking at a lengthy ban putting him out of this seasons remaining games, and perhaps the start of the 2013-14 campaign. All this will lead to more speculation regarding Liverpool’s leading goalscorer and his future at the club, with many calling for the Uruguayan to leave English soccer.
ICYMI, check out this footage of Patrice Evra — who was once allegedly racially abused by Suárez — as he pretends to bite a fake plastic arm thrown on the pitch as Manchester United celebrated winning the EPL crown last night. Ouch.
