Kamara could return to MLS, as Norwich sojourn nears end

A week from today, Sporting Kansas City could be welcoming back winger Kei Kamara from his loan spell with EPL side Norwich City.

In the nicest way possible, the towering attacker from Sierra Leone probably wishes to remain at Carrow Road.

Speaking out to the English media, Kamara spoke about living in his war-torn homeland, growing up close to the Home Depot Center in LA, interviewing David Beckham (then playing against him two years later) and plenty of other gems we’ve come to expect from the man who brought Sporting KC and MLS the “heart shaped hands” salute.

Kamara feels at home with Norwich, in fact he lives just a few hundred yards away from their stadium and spoke about his game day experience of walking to the ground with fans before games.

“Sometimes I’ll see a few people and we’ll chat on the way there and then again after the game,” Kamara said. “I’m always hoping the game goes well because if it doesn’t I have to stay a few extra hours, but when it does I walk home with the fans and they’re nice.”

He must be the only EPL player who walks to home games on a Saturday. But that sums him up, Kamara has always been different. The fans appreciate it and they greet Kamara’s carefree attitude with love and admiration via Twitter, on the pitch or just as he walks to the game with them on the street.

“They tell you good words and they get you going. I’m sure there’s a lot of places where players can’t do that because I’ve always heard how fans are crazy here watching games,” Kamara added. “But the thing about Norwich City, they really welcome you and they’re really behind the team, it’s just like a family.”

But with the arrival of Dutch striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel from Sporting Lisbon for $13.1 million already sealed for later this summer, are Norwich looking to extend Kamara’s loan and make it a permanent one?

Who knows.

He should stay in the EPL, be it with Norwich or another club. He is good enough and has worked hard for his chance. He is idolized by Norwich fans, who would be sad to see him go. That said, Sporting KC could certainly use him in their push for MLS Cup, US Open Cup and CONCACAF Champions League success.

Kamara’s next week in Norwich could shape the rest of his life. Here’s hoping it all turns out well for one of soccer’s good guys.
