Italian international and Juventus star Andrea Pirlo has announced he will retire from international competition following the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Pirlo made the announcement at the presentation of his autobiography “I Think, Therefore I Play” in Turin, Italy, saying “In 2014 I will stop with the national team, I think the World Cup will be my last appearance in the blue shirt. You have to leave room for the youngsters to come through.” This leaves the Azzurri without their creative midfielder known for his ability to create chances and provide timely assists.
However, the 33-year old has said he has no plans to retire from club competition “as long as I feel the desire, passion, and the sense I am still important to the team.”
Pirlo, sitting on 97 caps for his international side, was most recently named to the Euro 2012 team of the tournament following Italy’s finals appearance. He debuted in 2002 against Azerbaijan and has tallied 11 goals and 20 assists to his name.
He had possibly his best international tournament of his career in the 2006 World Cup, where he was named Man of the Match three times, assisted the opening goal of a 2-0 semifinal win over Germany, picked up the assist on the late equalizing goal in the final minutes against France, and then scored in the following penalty shootout. Italy would go on to win the title, and Pirlo was awarded the Bronze Ball as the top assist producer in the tournament.
