It was a cause for celebration at Juventus Stadium, as the Old Lady secured their 29th league title and second in a row by defeating Palermo 1-0.
Unfortunately, it was marred by thousands of rambunctious fans who invaded the pitch and defaced the stadium by such acts including taking up pieces of grass and ripping down goal nets, according to Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri, who live tweeted the event.
According to Palmeri, the players’ pitch celebration was cut short, forcing them into the dressing room with armed guards protecting the entrances. They were not able to complete the lap of honor usually reserved for a team that wishes to thanks its fans for support. The squad attempted to return from the dressing room back onto the field after a bit of order had been restored, but a second pitch invasion forced them to return to safety.
It is Juventus’s 29th Scudetto officially, their 31st overall counting the two struck down by Serie A for the Calciopoli match-fixing scandal that left the club demoted to Serie B among other punishments. During the team’s brief pitch celebration, the players held up a giant flag and big posters with the number “31” on it, clearly counting those two titles that were revoked.
The team won with 83 points, 14 ahead of Napoli in second place, with three matches left on Juventus’s schedule.
Palmeri tweeted this picture of the pitch invasion after the team was forced back into the dressing room a second time.
