So long, Nike. Arsenal have shoved the clothing giants out the door after 20 years in favor of German manufacturers Puma and their mega-deal.
Puma has signed on for £30 million ($45.5 million) per year for 5 years, and could be worth up to £170 million ($263.2 million) over the course of the contract. This easily overtakes Liverpool’s new deal with Warrior (around £25 million/$38.7 million per year) for the richest in the Premier League.
Depending on how the funds are transferred and distributed, this could give manager Arsene Wenger much more spending power than he’s used to having. In recent years he’s often been criticized by fans and media for being stingy, but a new influx of kit money could certainly change things at the Emirates. This could be given an even bigger boost thanks to the rumor that Puma has paid a bit in advance as a sort of “signing bonus” and would be available for use in the summer.
The story in the Mirror mentioned Puma’s strong ties in Africa, which they believed would be of great use to them in a partnership with Arsenal, who boast African player Gervinho, plus French players Bacaray Sagna and Abou Diaby who both are of African decent.
If you’re really looking too far into things, you’ll note that Barcelona midfielder and former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas is one of Puma’s biggest sponsorship signees. He’s been linked with a return to the Emirates this summer.
