Timmy Chandler picks up knee injury, will miss rest of Bundesliga season

U.S. defender Timmy Chandler has picked up a knee ligament injury and will miss Nurnberg’s final 2 matches of the season.

The injury also could affect his availability for the United States’ upcoming World Cup qualifiers at the end of May and beginning of June.

The 23-year-old right back’s injury wasn’t specified more than a ligament tear in his left knee that could keep him out three weeks to a month.  That timeframe could most likely mean he tore the MCL or PCL, or possibly his meniscus.  The length of his recovery would depend on the extent of the tear.

Chandler recently started the qualifier with Honduras in February, cap-tying him to the United States.  Chandler spent a while looking to decide his future internationally, as he also has eligibility in Germany having been born there.

DaMarcus Beasley, who had an up and down match against Mexico, would be a candidate to replace him at right back.  Edgar Castillo is also injured, so that option remains a question mark as well.  Also don’t rule out another call up for Real Salt Lake’s Tony Beltran, who made camp a few times in the past.

The upcoming international matches first would be friendlies with Belgium and Germany on May 29 and June 2, before qualifiers with Jamaica, Panama, and Honduras starting June 7.
