U.S. national team weekend scouting spread over three continents

May 10, 2013, 5:10 PM EDT

Members of the U.S. national team coaching staff will spread themselves over five countries in three continents this weekend, watching over players under consideration for the busy summer ahead.

The travels for Jurgen Klinsmann and his assistants will stretch from Brazil in South America to Mexico in North American and over to Spain, Germany and Italy in Europe. And none of that includes monitoring the dozens of candidates here in the United States (Major League Soccer) and in England.

Some of the matches will involve seriously white knuckle stuff for the clubs that employ our boys abroad. For instance, European-based assistant Andi Herzog will be in Germany as relegation-threatened Honnenheim, with Americans Fabian Johnson and Danny Williams, face Hamburg in a huge match. (The Bundesliga standings are here.)

Herzog will also watch Michael Parkhurst’s club Augsburg, also hoping to dodge the relegation knife, do uphill battle with Bundesliga champion Bayern Munich. (Bayern has long since clinched the Germany title.)

In Italy, Michael Bradley (pictured) and Roma are still targeting a fifth-place finish and a Europa League spot. This weekend’s toughie is against third-place AC Milan.

More details are here from U.S. Soccer.
