We know the timing is pretty unfortunate on Osvaldo Alonso’s injury. What we don’t yet know is the extent, or much about the timing on a return.
Seattle’s holding midfielder left in the first half of his team’s 4-2 win Saturday over FC Dallas.
Either way, the injury news and the coming absence of striker Eddie Johnson, who scored twice last night, for national team duty threatens to undercut the Sounders’ mounting momentum.
As for Alonso, losing the team’s midfield engine and the man who sets the standard for midfield ball winning in MLS would never be ideal. But the Sounders are about to dive into the dual-competition phase of their schedule.
They travel to Los Angeles twice over the next two weeks, next weekend to face the two-time defending champion Galaxy and then six days later to face Chivas USA. In between, Sigi Schmid’s team will open its account in the U.S. Open Cup – a tournament that we know the Sounders value.
Sandwiched quite inconveniently in between is a trip into Florida for third-round Open Cup play, something Schmid isn’t too excited about as it is, although he is managing to be restrained in his comments.
So, yes … it’s a tough road ahead for the men from the Emerald City. What Schmid said last night about Alonso’s injury:
Don’t really know. It’s a left adductor strain. We’ll just have to see. Right after the game you can’t tell, it’s usually a day or two later that you can assess it and determine how long it will be.”
