New York City FC got one of their first big announcements spot on.

Claudio Reyna is the new Director of Football for NYC FC.

Announced during a press conference in Lexington, NY this morning, Reyna is now the figurehead for the new franchise and what a wonderful appointment he is.

The former USMNT captain and Manchester City player will lead the charge as New York City FC are officially up and running.

“With the large soccer fanbase in New York, the city is desperate for a team. I think it is very clear than NYC deserves a team and needs a team,” Reyna said. “We will make sure that we represent the city correctly. It is truly an honor to be the first employee of New York City FC.”

Reyna spoke alongside MLS Commissioner Don Garber, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano, New York Yankees part owner Hal Steinbrenner and Yankees president Randy Levine.

They announced the new franchises partnership with Manchester City and the Yankees and talked about the importance of having an MLS team in New York City proper.

Man City CEO Soriano was delighted to name Reyna as the leader of the ambitious club.

“He is the most important employee of the house,” Soriano said of Reyna. “He is a New Yorker and understands New York very well. He not only played for the USMNT but was their captain and not only played in Europe but played for Manchester City.”

Reyna remarked about his time at City, with the impact the club had with the community.

“In Manchester I really saw what the club was about and linked to the community. That is something we want to emulate here as well.” Reyna continued. “I grew up around here and nobody ever dreamed of playing professional soccer. I truly cannot believe where the sport is today. When I was growing up in New Jersey we didn’t have a league, I was at the tail end of the NASL. To see where MLS is today is something I would never have dreamed of.”

So is Reyna’s appointment good for the future of NYC FC? Absolutely.

Not only is he known as “Captain America” for leading the USMNT for many years, he also has huge links to the local area and with Manchester City and has set up his own foundation.

He is perfect for this role. The first of many announcements from New York City FC, between now and 2015 when they enter MLS, was a very, very good one.
