Multiple reports from France have suggested that Portugese giants FC Porto have agreed to sell both young star James Rodriguez and midfielder Joao Moutinho for what some reports say is in the range of a whopping €60-70 million ($77.6-90.5 million) fee to AS Monaco.
The megadeal will come as a downer to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, who both were targeting Rodriguez in this transfer window. The 21-year-old winger even hinted yesterday that United had made a bid for him (although talkSPORT conveniently didn’t say what the hint was, shocking).
French site RMC Sport claimed the pair were in France for a medical ahead of the move.
Many Colombian outlets have labeled Rodriguez as “the new Falcao” as their young starlet continues to develop. He has 10 goals and 8 assists in 21 Primeira Liga matches this season, along with a Champions League goal. He was bought by Porto in 2010 from Argentinian side Club Atletico Banfield for about €7.5 million ($9.7 million).
Moutinho has been a staple at Porto since the days of Andre Villas-Boas, hence his link with Tottenham as well. He was bought from fellow Portugese side Sporting Lisbon for about €11.5 million ($14.9 million).
Monaco, meanwhile, have burst onto the scene since being purchased by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev in 2011. They won the French Ligue 2 this season, earning automatic promotion to Ligue 1 where they will compete next season for the first time since their relegation in 2011.
