In a mind-blowing move, USA Today have reported the LA Galaxy have sent a player to the Chicago Fire in exchange for the rights to Robbie Rogers. Steven Goff of the Washington Post is reporting that the player traded for Rogers is LA’s red-hot midfield cornerstone Mike Magee.
Rogers splashed headlines in February when he announced his retirement and came out as the first openly gay player in US professional sports, and would be the first openly gay active MLS player.
It isn’t surprising that Rogers will be headed to the Galaxy – it was rumored before he was speaking with their representatives. It’s a bit surprising, however, that the Galaxy would be so willing to part with their “Mr. November,” a guy who has 6 goals in 10 appearances this season, for someone who hasn’t played a professional match since December, even if it is Rogers.
Nevertheless, he’ll be a draw at the stadium and it’s fantastic to see him make such a major step forward in his comeback.
Rogers definitely wasn’t going to be coming back with Chicago, that much has been known for a while. He told our very own Steve Davis, “I don’t want to go to Chicago. I think if it comes down to, ‘You can only play in Chicago,’ then I probably won’t go back. I need to do it somewhere where I’m totally 100 percent comfortable so … I would most likely do it closest to my family.”
Rogers is from Rancho Palos Verdes, just outside Los Angeles.
It should also be noted, Magee is originally from Chicago. Everyone’s going home!
