USMNT forward Terrence Boyd on ex-club Borussia Dortmund’s UCL charge

The USMNT could’ve had two players suiting up for Borussia Dortmund in tomorrow’s Champions League final.

The first is Neven Subotic, a 24-year-old center back who is now one of the most promising defenders in Europe.

We all know his story, he switched his allegiance to Serbia after representing the US at youth level but falling out with certain coaches.

But a player who did stick with the US despite his European roots, is USMNT’s promising forward Terrence Boyd. You see, he could have also been gearing up for the Champions League Final at Wembley… if he had stayed at Dortmund.

“It’s crazy,” Boyd told MLSsoccer.com’s Greg Seltzer. “I’m surprised they {Dortmund] are in the final, but I’m just happy for them. I hope they take it.”

Boyd decided to leave Dortmund and has flourished in his first season in Austria. The young striker spoke of how he will try and soak up some of the atmosphere from his former teammates, by giving them a call on their cell after the final whistle.

The 22-year-old, who finished this season in Austria with 16 goals and eight assists for Austria Vienna heading into the final weekend of the season, believes all the players should be happy. “No matter what happens, both teams can feel like winners, because it’s just a big game to be in and a challenging final. They can be proud of what they achieved.”

Boyd never made a first-team appearance at Dortmund but did score 20 goals for their reserve side in the 2011-12 season. His “if only” moment is maybe nothing more than a quick reflective pause before he continues his season in Austria.

But with Clint Dempsey narrowly missing out on his UEFA Champions League dream with Tottenham Hotspur this season, who will be the next USMNT star to try and become the first US player to win a Champions League winners medal?

Subotic doesn’t count, of course. If only.
